The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered this morning by the Yadron Family.
Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church. We are honored by your presence. It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.
If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing. These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye. Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people. Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.
The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity. While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith. Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion. The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession. All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy. Thank you for your understanding.

St. John Pictorial Directory – Our parish will have a pictorial directory made this year! The photographer will take pictures on three different days: December 2, 3 & 4. We need all families to sign up for a time slot to have pictures made; please sign up on the sheet in the parish hall.
Schedule for Bishop BASIL’s Pastoral Visit, Oct. 22-24 – This year we will have a slight change in the normal schedule. Because Bishop BASIL must leave earlier on Sunday than he normally does, we will have dinner catered on Saturday night after Vespers (instead of on Sunday, after Liturgy). Therefore, Vespers will be slightly earlier, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Church school, Orthros and Divine Liturgy will all begin at the normal times. Please sign up on the sheet in the parish hall for the Saturday night Corky’s barbeque dinner. This is a wonderful time for fellowship with our beloved bishop! His Grace will greet the children of the parish at the beginning of Church school on Sunday morning, October 24. Be sure to have your children here if you can.

The Secretary of the Holy Synod: Protopresbyter George Dimas
“Do not be disturbed and angered, when anybody tells a falsehood to your face, or claims any unjust pretension, or speaks offensively, or boldly detects any of your weaknesses or passions, the wrongfulness of which, through your self-love, you did not suspect. Always first coolly reflect over what your opponent says to you, as well as over your own words and conduct, and, if, upon an entirely impartial consideration of your words and actions, you find them just, then let your conscience be at rest, and do not heed the words of your adversary, either remaining silent before him, or showing him his error quietly, gently, in all kindness of heart; but should you find yourself guilty of that, which your adversary detects in you, then, putting aside self-love and pride, ask pardon for your fault, and endeavor to correct yourself in the future."

A landmark statement on the right of comatose people to receive food and water was made by Pope John Paul Ii earlier this year: “Even our brothers and sisters who find themselves in the clinical condition of a ‘vegetative state’ retain their human dignity in all their fullness. The loving gaze of God the Father continues to fall upon them, acknowledging them as His sons and daughters, especially in need of help.”
Funeral Questionnaire – Remember, the parish has a 3 page questionnaire that it keeps on file for those who desire to put in writing the particular information that is helpful when we fall asleep in the Lord. It also serves as a check list of things that should be considered before hand. While some parishioners have completed one, most have not. Contact the church office if you would like to do so.
“Go in peace means ‘Go in righteousness.’ Righteousness is peace with God, while sin is hostility towards God. See that when Jesus has forgiven her her sins, He does not stop there, but adds to this the commandment to do good. For you ought to understand, Go in peace to mean, ‘Go and do those things which will put you at peace with God.’” - Blessed Theophylact’s comments on Luke 7:50; note that the priest directs the faithful at the end of the Liturgy, saying, “Let us depart in peace,” or essentially, “Go in peace.”
