The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered this morning by the Hodges Family.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

Worship and liturgical reminders and explanations:

Receiving the Holy Mystery of Communion – As Orthodox Christians, we maintain the ancient tradition of receiving the Holy Gifts from the chalice by the use of the spoon.  This tradition is older than that used in the west, and all receive both the Body and the Blood of our Lord.  Because of the sanctity of the Gifts, it is imperative that we use great care as we receive.  The best way to receive the gifts is to take them off the spoon by closing your mouth over the gifts as you would when you yourself use a spoon.  This prevents almost all chances of the Gifts being spilled from your mouth onto your clothes or the floor.  In our parish, most actually now receive this way.  Others do not, probably for various reasons, including, in some cases, fear of the spread of germs.  To my knowledge there is now little to support this fear, and the risks of spilling the Gifts is almost entirely removed.   - Fr John

Judy Perkins and Trent Terry will be united in Holy Matrimony on May 20 at 3:00 PM.  All are invited.  There will be a reception here at the church following the service.  Many Years, Judy and Trent!!

Library Lines – Does it ever seem like Ascension gets lost between Pascha and Pentecost?  Why didn’t Jesus just stay with the Apostles?  Anthony M. Coniaris explains in Sermons on the Major Holy Days of the Orthodox Church that the answer is all wrapped up in the Trinity and that this event is part of our salvation.  Read his sermon and the accounts of this week’s saints including Holy Martyr Glyceria in the St. John Library.

Decorating the Nave for Pentecost – Orthodox churches are traditionally decorated with greenery for the feast of Pentecost (which is Sunday, May 27th).  As Fr. Thomas Hopko explains in his catechetical book Worship, “the church is decorated with … the green leaves of the summer to show that God’s divine Breath comes to renew all creation as the ‘life-creating Spirit.’”  Jodi Elliott will be heading up the effort of decorating this year, and help is needed both in supplying the greenery and in decorating.  If you'd like to lend a hand, please feel free to join in!  If you would like to contribute greenery – from a florist or simply from your own yard – please bring it to church following Soul Saturday Liturgy on May 26thIf you have greenery in your yard you'd like to offer, or if you have questions about what is needed, contact Jodi Elliott.
