All Saints Sunday – First Sunday after Pentecost

June 3, 2007

Epistle: Hebrews 11:33-12:2            Gospel: Matthew 10:32-33, 37-38; 19:27-30

The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered this morning by Ellie Moore.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

From Joseph Weaver:

Friends,

After a very full but good leave in the States, we are beginning our journey back to Jagdeeshpur. We have received word from the hospital that it is indeed hot, with temperatures soaring to over 120 degrees during mid day. Supplies of electricity and water have become severely limited and erratic. Please pray for us as we return. Please pray especially for the children, including the little one whom Sima is carrying.

There have also been increasing acts of violence against believers in our vicinity in the recent months, some directed against westerners passing through RaipurPlease pray for protection over our family.

Trusting in His sovereignty and grace, and thanking you for your prayers,

The Weaver Family

To better serve those who come - Thanks be to God, we continue to have many visitors, serious inquirers, and Orthodox people moving into town who want to join our parish.  To help welcome and serve those individuals, for lack of a better term, a “newcomers committee” would be a great aid to the continued development of the parish.  If you are interested in becoming involved, please call Fr. John.

News from St. Paul Skete – Mother Nektaria will celebrate the patronal feast for the Skete on the morning of June 29 (Feast of Ss Peter and Paul).  Fr. John will celebrate the liturgy there that morning.  The full schedule of services includes readers’ services on Thursday evening June 28, beginning at 6:00 PM, for the Vigil and 1st hour, followed the next morning, beginning at 8:00 AM, with the Akathist to the saints, 3rd and 6th hours, and the Divine Liturgy to begin at 9:00 AM.  There will be a potluck meal following the Liturgy.

LIBRARY LINES –

This week we commemorate several saints who pique our interest on more than one account.  Sts. Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, encourage us all to service and worship.  A hymn of praise to them is on the bulletin board at St. John Library.  See also the story of St. Sophia, a mother of six and caregiver of orphans and widows, who prayed ceaselessly.  St. Kalliope, a Greek name meaning the beautiful-voiced, suffered great tortures for the Faith. Three saints from the British Isles and one from ancient Gaul are also remembered - Venerable Kevin of Ireland(6/3), Venerable Cedd of Essex(6/7), Venerable Columba of Scotland(6/9), and Queen Clotilde of the Franks(6/3).  Those of us senior citizens will enjoy looking through "The Legend of Saint Columba" by Padric Colum and iillustrated by E. Mackenstry.  This old book will bring back memories of books enjoyed in elementary school.
