The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered this morning by Reem Mansour.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

- ALMS-GIVING -

FOOD PANTRY - Please remember that we give items from the food pantry to a few specific families all year long and this is a wonderful way to give alms all throughout the year.  We will continue to keep a bin just outside the parish hall for collection of these items. If you currently have any hotel-type toiletries accumulating in your bathroom closets, please bring them in...they are of great help to those we give bags of food to.

Michael Bittle Fund – Holy Trinity Orthodox Church – Little Rock, AR

St. Paul Mission Station – Tupelo, MS

Wednesday nights – It is our plan to begin Wednesday night teachings on October 29.  The revised schedule for Wednesdays will be as follows:

                        Dinner                          6:15 PM

                        Teaching                       7:00 PM

The teaching time will be limited to no more than 45 minutes, so we plan to be finished at 7:45 PM, which we hope will work well for families.  We also plan to post the teaching topics beforehand.  This is a great opportunity for all of us to pray and learn together – I hope many of you will take advantage of it!

Coffee hour – Since we initiated our Small changes in Coffee Hour” as I termed them, we have had many comments, mostly negative.  To that end, we are putting together another revision which we hope will better match the desires and needs of our parishioners.  Thanks to everyone who offered your thoughts.  If you have additional thoughts or suggestions, please feel free to forward them to me.  Obviously it is impossible to please everyone completely, but we hope to structure coffee hour to best facilitate hospitality for our visitors and fellowship for our parishioners.

OCF – Orthodox Christian Fellowship

This week at the Barth House at 7:00 pm – Guest speaker, Fr. Mark Sutton

Any questions contact Ethan vanDrimmelen

Bulletin Boards - We have several bulletin boards in the parish hall which have lots of information on them.  There is one dedicated to the church school for samples of our children’s work.  A second is dedicated to the women of the church, and the third is for general parish, diocesan, and other Orthodox news and events.

We have also begun a fourth board, on the door to the pantry (straight ahead as you walk in the west doors) which will be dedicated to “community issues and news.”  If you want to (1) share community events; (2) to sell, loan, borrow, or donate items; (3) to offer to hire someone short or long term, or (4) to share other needs or requests, this is the place to do it.  After four weeks, the item will be removed.  If you wish for it to stay there longer, please contact the office.

With a centralized spot, I hope we can keep this important type of information before people regularly.  BE SURE to check the board when you enter – there may be an opportunity for you or others!

LIBRARY LINES – Who is a constant source of comfort when our non-Orthodox relatives die?  St. Varus (10/19) is much loved and prayed to saint in our parish.  He was a Roman soldier in Egypt and a secret Christian. He joined a band of martyrs being encouraged by them, much like the 40 martyrs of Sebaste.  His relics were rescued by a pious widow, and St. Varus appeared to her at her son’s death.  He is a beloved saint of great compassion who comforts us by praying for the souls of our relatives outside the Church.

Asleep for 200 years!  Our Holy Tradition passes down to us stories of events that defy the natural order of the world.  The seven sleepers of Ephesus (10/22) retreated in a cave to pray and fast in preparation for martyrdom.  The pagan emperor had the cave sealed, and God preserved the youths, asleep for over 200 years. The Mystery of the Resurrection was shown to all when their cave was discovered and the sleepers were found alive at a period in history when heretics denied the physical resurrection.

Friday we honor the Joy Of All Who Sorrow Icon of the Theotokos (10/24). This is one of the most beautiful icons of her.  In it, she is surrounded by flowers and scenes in which the faithful are traveling, suffering in sickness and old age, and enduring other storms of life. Healings are associated with this icon, and one by this name is in San Francisco.

Saturday we commemorate one who reminds us of our much loved Urania. St. Tabitha(10/25) (Dorcas) was raised from the dead by St. Peter. Her icon shows women surrounding her bier and showing the Apostle the many garments she had sewed for them and their families. She lived out her faith by showing her love to those around her.

See the extraordinary icons of these commemorations and their stories in

St. John Library.

Divine Liturgy for St. James – Come worship and pray with us this

Thursday at 6:00 am as we remember the brother of our Lord!

Pro-life Corner - Jane Roe – Last Sunday afternoon I was able to hear a short talk by “Jane Roe,” of Roe vs Wade, the now infamous Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.  Her name is actually Norma McCorvey.  She is now 61 years old, a practicing Roman Catholic, and a dedicated pro-life advocate since 1995.  She is not a polished speaker, although she speaks regularly all over the country.  Her talk was simply about pieces of her story, very simply told, and with the firm statement that “I was just wrong.”   While her Sunday talk was short, in her book, Won by Love, she says the following:

“I was sitting in O.R.'s offices when I noticed a fetal development poster. The progression was so obvious, the eyes were so sweet. It hurt my heart, just looking at them. I ran outside and finally, it dawned on me. ‘Norma,’ I said to myself, ‘They're right.’ I had worked with pregnant women for years. I had been through three pregnancies and deliveries myself. I should have known. Yet something in that poster made me lose my breath. I kept seeing the picture of that tiny, 10-week-old embryo, and I said to myself, ‘that's a baby!’ It's as if blinders just fell off my eyes and I suddenly understood the truth—‘that's a baby!’

“I felt crushed under the truth of this realization. I had to face up to the awful reality. Abortion wasn't about ‘products of conception.’ It wasn't about ‘missed periods.’ It was about children being killed in their mother's wombs. All those years I was wrong. Signing that affidavit, I was wrong. Working in an abortion clinic, I was wrong. No more of this first trimester, second trimester, third trimester stuff. Abortion–at any point–was wrong. It was so clear. Painfully clear.”

She is a simple lady, who has lived a hard life, and has turned her life over to God.  After the talk, I went up to her, simply to hold and kiss her hand and say “God bless you – it took a lot of guts to do what you did.”  Even as I am writing this, I have tears in my eyes as I remember what seemed to me to be a sadness in her eyes that may never leave.  A small lady, shorter than, and as thin as, Pamela, she simply said “thank you.”  I was the one blessed.  Thanks be to God.         - Fr. John
