LIBRARY LINES – Monday we
commemorate the Prophet Amos. Unlike
most prophets, he came from a family of shepherds and was unschooled. He also was a dresser of sycamore trees.
Accordingly, he employs in his writing vivid imagery – wagons, grasshoppers,
birds, and cattle. He spoke well, using
poetic devices and picturesque speech to prophesy the crucifixion, resurrection
and ascension of Christ. In some of his icons he is shown as an old man who
resembles
As we
remember our earthly fathers next week, it is appropriate that the Church
celebrates the feast day of St. Jude (6/19) Friday. We often think of the saints as perfect,
solitary, and far removed from our struggles.
However, St. Jude was one from among us.
We call him the brother of the Lord, because he was the son of Joseph
the Betrothed. However, he was very
possessive of his inheritance from him. Later, in humility and awareness of his
lack of faith and love for Christ, he always referred to himself as the brother
of James, his brother who willingly shared his inheritance with Jesus. St. Jude was married with children and the
cousin of the Forerunner. He exhorts us
in his short epistle to persevere in faith and good works.
See
their icons and stories in St. John Library.
Due to a
number of reasons, we will not be printing and mailing the Evangelist at this
time. If you would like a paper copy, there will be a few available in the
parish hall. Please note that there is not a calendar included. However, at any
time you are able to access both a calendar and the weekly bulletin on our
website http://www.stjohnmemphis.org/.

From
the Fathers
“No
one on this earth can avoid affliction; and although the afflictions which the
Lord sends are not great, men imagine them beyond their strength and are crushed by
them. This is because they will not humble their souls and commit themselves to
the will of God. But the Lord Himself guides with His grace those who are given
over to God's will, and they bear all things with fortitude for the sake of God
Whom they have so loved and with Whom they are
glorified for ever. It is impossible to escape tribulation in this world but
the man who is given over to the will of God bears tribulation easily, seeing
it but putting his trust in the Lord, and so his tribulations pass.”
-
Archimandrite Sophrony
“Blessed is the one who
observes with spiritual understanding the choirs of stars shining with glory
and the beauty of the heavens and longs to contemplate the Maker of all
things.”
- St. Ephraim the
Syrian
“Prayer introduces the human
spirit into God’s realm where the rock of life dwells; and the body also, led
by the spirit, partakes of that life. A contrite
spirit, feelings of repentance, and tears – these do not diminish our physical
strength but add to it, for they bring the soul to a state of comfort.”
- St. Theophan the Recluse
“What, then, are the things
which are being prepared for those who wait for Him? The Creator and
Father of the ages, the All-holy One Himself knows their greatness and
beauty. Let us then strive to be found among the number of those that wait,
that we may receive a share of the promised gifts.”
- St. Clement of
