The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Jack Turner.
Welcome
to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.
We are honored by your presence.
It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine
Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.
If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may
see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the
cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing. These can be perplexing to the uninitiated
eye. Rest assured that everything we do
has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among

Wednesday Meals – Our Wednesday meals have been very successful over the
last year, allowing our parishioners to pray and visit afterward during the
week. Our goal has been to simply break
even, cost-wise. We are planning to vary
our offerings a little more, alternating between three providers. Additionally, in order to break even, we will need to go from $3.50 to $4.00 per
person. We hope this will not pose a
major problem to anyone.
Lost & Found – We have had a significant number of dishes, baskets, and umbrellas
along with various other items left at the church recently. Please check the tables under the icons in
the parish hall for any items that may belong to you. With the church’s growth, we have limited
storage space, so please claim your items as soon as possible. Thank you!
Mercy Meals - Sincere
thanks to everyone who has supplied a meal for our families with new babies and
other needs over the past few weeks - it has been much appreciated! If
you are able to provide a meal for the Dn Sidney Elliott Family, or the Longa
Family, please contact Anna-Sarah Farha.

Future Icons in the church
Several have asked about
approved subjects for the remaining icons to be added in the church. Two lists are available and in the parish
hall, the first listing the individual saints already present in the
iconography in the church. The second
list is of those which are “approved” or under consideration.

Our course to Pascha began
with Zacchaeus Sunday, and Tuesday we celebrate his
feast day. The journey began with
Christ’s encounter with this small man who was a publican. He is an icon to us of repentance because of his
faith in action; he climbed a tree to see Jesus and gave abundant restitution
to those he had cheated. Tradition tells us that he became a disciple of St.
Peter who appointed him as Bishop of Caesara in
We also honor two women this
week from very different backgrounds.
St. Alexandra (4/23) was married to the emperor Diocletian. She raised their daughter, St. Valeria, in
the Faith. They were both banished after
Valeria refused to marry Emperor Maximus. After his
death, they returned to
St. Elizabeth the
wonderworker (4/24) spent her life from childhood in a monastery. Her mother had been given a revelation that
her daughter was chosen by God for special blessings. She was a strict ascetic
and was given the gift of healing. She wore a hair shirt and kept a strict
fast. Tradition says that she lived and died between the sixth and ninth
century.
See icons of these saints and
their stories in St. John Library.

The Kroger program works differently than the Schnucks program. You will need to purchase a $5 Gift Card from Trish in the office. You would then take the card to Customer Service at any Kroger store and have them load the desired amount (up to $500) onto your card. You may reload it as often as you like! You would then use your card to pay for your groceries, prescriptions or gas.
Worship
and litur
When one comes forward to receive the Eucharist, it is
proper to cross the arms over the chest.
When the communicant’s turn to receive is next, he should say, “The servant of God/the handmaid of God,
(your name by which you commune).”
You may then receive (1) by taking the Mysteries off the spoon and
closing your lips completely over the end of the spoon, just a child would who
is being fed by his parent (this is the safest and preferred method), or (2)
you may tip your head back slightly and open your mouth widely enough for the
priest drop the Holy Mysteries in your mouth.
Having received, it is appropriate to remain for the prayers of
thanksgiving following the dismissal.

“. . . With all my strength I pray
to God for you, that He may send into your hearts that fire, which our Lord
Jesus Christ has come to send on the earth (Luke 12:49), that you may have
power to govern rightly your intentions and senses and to distinguish good from
evil.”
~St. Anthony the Great
“Often our knowledge becomes
darkened because we fail to put things into practice. For when we have totally
neglected to practice something, our memory of it will gradually disappear. For this reason Scripture urges us to acquire
the knowledge of God, so that through our works we may serve Him rightly.”
~St. Mark the Ascetic
“Let us go forward with the heart
completely attentive and the soul fully conscious. For if attentiveness
and prayer are daily joined together, they become like Elias’s fire-bearing
chariot, raising us to heaven. What do I mean? A spiritual heaven, with
sun, moon and stars, is formed in the blessed heart of one who has reach a state of watchfulness, or who strives to attain
it.”
~St. Philotheus of
Sinai
“My children,
avoid criticism -- a very great sin. God is grieved whenever we criticize and
loathe people. Let us concern ourselves only with our own faults -- for these
let us feel pain; let us criticize ourselves and then we will find mercy and
grace from God.”
~Elder Ephraim of Philotheou
Mount Athos

not attached to anything transitory or corruptible. Blessed is the intellect
that transcends all sensible objects and ceaselessly delights in divine beauty.
