Epistle:  1 Peter 5:6-14                                  Gospel:  John 5:1-15

The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Kim Hilal.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

Remember our "Friends in Need" diocesan activity

Our local and diocesan Antiochian women maintain a list of those who cannot participate fully in the life of their parish, or who have a serious illness, and would be encouraged by receiving periodic cards and letters from us. This year, we're expanding participation in this program to include our entire parish of St. John! Misty Duke, is our humanitarian coordinator, and Nicholas Hill has offered to assist however possible.

Nicholas has a real talent for calligraphy and uses it to provide hand-made pieces of encouragement to those whom he writes. Jill Healy also decorates cards that she sends.  As Nicholas said, “You can design and create your own card or just send a note or letter of encouragement.  The only requirement is a sincere desire to reach out to someone in need.  ‘That which comes from the heart reaches the heart.’”  If you have questions, call Misty or Nicholas.

Prolife Cornerff

There are approximately 9,000 abortions performed in Shelby County each year.  That's more than one abortion every hour. That is a statistic that is hard to digest.  It is even more disturbing that many times those going to abortion clinics are being given incorrect information and exceptionally bad counseling.

There are numerous ways to address this horrific set of circumstances.  One is to support women and unborn children in difficult circumstances where abortion appears to be a convenient solution.  Birth Right is a local organization that merits our investigation on this front.  We hope to have more information about helping them in the future.

Another avenue is to expose harmful activities of abortion clinics.  Live Action, a youth-led pro-life movement based in California has been successful in exposing a number of seriously dangerous and illegal activities amongst abortion providers.  If you are interested in supporting them, simply go to their website for more information.

One of the beauties of Orthodoxy is its connectiveness. Three weeks ago we celebrated Pascha. In a mystery, we in the 21st century entered into an event that occurred in 32 A.D. Even our hymns sang of Old Testament men who foretold or were types of Christ. This phenomenon is reflected on a smaller scale this week in our liturgical calendar.  This week and next Sunday we commemorate a contemporary of Christ, and Old Testament prophet and an fourth century hierarch, all who touch our lives today.

St. James (4/30) was the brother of our own St. John. They were in the inner circle of Christ’s disciples, and He called them “the sons of thunder.”  James preached the Gospel in Spain after Pentecost and returned to Jerusalem.  The Jews sent men to discredit his message and spread lies about him. History records the names of three of them and tradition tells us they were later converted.  St. James, the first martyred of the Apostles, was beheaded in 44 A D.

It is not by chance that we honor the Prophet Jeremiah (5/1) soon after Pascha. His life mirrored that of Jesus. God called him at age 15 but he refused Him because of his youth and inability to speak well. God touched his mouth and gave him words. He spent the next 23 years warning the Jews about their impending captivity because they had forsaken God and worshipped idols.  He was mocked, imprisoned and eventually killed by them.

St. Athanasius (5/2) is linked in our minds with the First Ecumenical Council. There he refuted the heresy of Arius. The Council supported his arguments but the Arians persecuted him throughout his life. At one time, his was deposed as a bishop and lived under death threats. He wrote letters in defense of Orthodoxy, commentaries on the Scriptures and a biography of St. Anthony the Great.

SCHNUCKS

Simply register your existing Schnucks grocery card online or over the phone.  If you do not currently have a Schnucks card, they are available free of charge in the office (see Trish).

From the Fathers

“Never say, “Why has this happened to me?” Or when you see someone with gangrene or cancer or blindness, don’t ask, “Why did this happen to them?” But ask God to give you the vision of the other bank of the river. Then you will see with the angels as it is in fact: Everything is according to the plan of God. Everything!”                                     ~Gerondessa Gavriella

“Do you wish to enter Paradise more quickly? This is what you must do: When you pray, do not complete your prayer before arousing in your heart some feeling toward God—reverence, loyalty, thanksgiving, exaltation, humility, contrition, or assurance and hope in God . . .”

~St. Theophan the Recluse

“Let yourself be persecuted, but do not persecute others. Be crucified, but do not crucify others. Be slandered, but do not slander others. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep: such is the sign of purity. Suffer with the sick. Be afflicted with sinners. Exult with those who repent. Be the friend of all, but in your spirit remain alone. Be a partaker of the sufferings of all, but keep your body distant from all. Rebuke no one, revile no one, not even those who live very wickedly. Spread your cloak over those who fall into sin, each and every one, and shield them. And if you cannot take the fault on yourself and accept punishment in their place, do not destroy their character.”

~St. Isaac the Syrian

It was said of Abba John the Dwarf that he withdrew and lived in the desert at Scetis with an old man of Thebes. His Abba, taking a piece of dry wood, planted it and said to him, 'Water it every day with a bottle of water, until it bears fruit.' Now the water was so far away that he had to leave in the evening and return the following morning. At the end of three years the wood came to life and bore fruit. Then the old man took some of the fruit and carried it to the church saying to the brethren, 'Take and eat the fruit of obedience.'
