see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the
cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing. These can be perplexing to the uninitiated
eye. Rest assured that everything we do

Our
local and diocesan Antiochian women maintain a list
of those who cannot participate fully in the life of their parish, or who have
a serious illness, and would be encouraged by receiving periodic cards and
letters from us. This year, we're expanding participation in this program to
include our entire parish of

encouragement to those whom he writes. Jill Healy also decorates cards that she

The only requirement is a sincere desire to reach out to someone in need.

One of the beauties of
Orthodoxy is its connectiveness. Three weeks ago we
celebrated Pascha. In a mystery, we in the 21st century entered into
an event that occurred in 32 A.D. Even our hymns sang of Old Testament men who
foretold or were types of Christ. This phenomenon is reflected on a smaller
scale this week in our liturgical calendar.
This week and next Sunday we commemorate a contemporary of Christ, and
Old Testament prophet and an fourth century hierarch, all who touch our lives
today.
St. James (4/30) was the

It is not by chance that we
honor the Prophet Jeremiah (5/1) soon after Pascha. His life mirrored that of
Jesus. God called him at age 15 but he refused Him because of his youth and
inability to speak well. God touched his mouth and gave him words. He spent the
next 23 years warning the Jews about their impending captivity because they had
forsaken God and worshipped idols. He
was mocked, imprisoned and eventually killed by them.
St. Athanasius (5/2) is
linked in our minds with the First Ecumenical Council. There he refuted the
heresy of Arius. The Council supported his arguments but the Arians persecuted
him throughout his life. At one time, his was deposed as a bishop and lived
under death threats. He wrote letters in defense of Orthodoxy, commentaries on
the Scriptures and a biography of St. Anthony the Great.

the Fathers
“Never say, “Why has this happened
to me?” Or when you see someone with gangrene or cancer or blindness, don’t
ask, “Why did this happen to them?” But ask God to give you the vision of the
other bank of the river. Then you will see with the angels as it is in fact:
Everything is according to the plan of God. Everything!” ~Gerondessa Gavriella

~St. Theophan the Recluse
“Let yourself be
persecuted, but do not persecute others. Be crucified, but do not crucify
others. Be slandered, but do not slander others. Rejoice
with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep: such is the sign of
purity. Suffer with the sick. Be afflicted with sinners. Exult
with those who repent. Be the friend of all, but in your spirit remain alone. Be
a partaker of the sufferings of all, but keep your body distant from
all. Rebuke no one, revile no one, not even those
who live very wickedly. Spread your cloak over those who fall into sin,
each and every one, and shield them. And if you cannot take the fault on
yourself and accept punishment in their place, do not destroy their
character.”
