All Saints Sunday

1st Sunday after Pentecost

May 30, 2010

Epistle:  Hebrews 11:33-12:2                                    Gospel:  Matthew 10:32-38

The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Margaret McKelroy.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

We do miss you and the church in Memphis.  Please pray for us.

Love, Nellie”

Sons of Thunder - We will be meeting on Sunday evening, the sixth of June, at 19:00 (7:00 PM) at the home of Brandon and Caitlyn Maas.  We are still discussing Nihilism by Fr. Seraphim Rose and No Country For Old Men by Cormac McCarthy.  We also desire well-informed suggestions for our next reading.

Future Icons in the church - Several have asked about approved subjects for the remaining icons to be added in the church.  There is a list available in the parish hall containing the individual saints already present in the iconography in the church, as well as those which are “approved” or under consideration.

Kroger & Schnucks cards are available in the office for those interested.  Each time you use your Schnucks card or Kroger Gift Card, St. John will receive a percentage of your purchase.  This is a simple way to help the church while doing an everyday activity!

NEW ADDITIONS TO ST. JOHN LIBRARY !!!

Look around St. John Library and you’ll see many new titles.  So many, in fact, that this is only a partial list.  You will notice that it includes several of Charles Dickens’s works.  They add to the small fiction section which features titles of Russian and western authors whose works reflect Orthodox values.  You will also see titles that add to the corporate worship section with copies of the major, daily services of the church, such as Vespers and the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy. All of these books listed as well as the others are on display on the book cart and the top of the reference shelves.

PARTIAL LIST: Abba Isaac the Syrian, Beauty and Hesychia in Athonite Life, C.S. Lewis at the Breakfast Table, The Calendar Question, Canterbury Tales, Christ: the Eternal Tao, The Complete Father Brown, An Englishman in the Court of the Tsar, Free Choice in St. Maximus the Confessor, The Life and Sufferings of St.Katherine, Little Dorrit, Oliver Twist, Orthodox Psychotherapy, Our Mutual Friend, Saint Thikhon of Zadonsk, A Tale of Two Cities, Tchaikovsky.

aa LIBRARY LINES  aa

This week we commemorate two of our favorite saints,  Mary and Martha(6/4), the sisters of Lazarus. They are mentioned several times in the Scriptures and are numbered among the Myrrhbearers.  Perhaps we particularly love these sisters because they were friends of Jesus. They also seem very real to us because of our need for prayer and our ‘busyness” with life’s small cares.  A hymn of praise to them is on the bulletin board in St. John Library.  See also the story of St. Sophia(6/4), a mother of six and caregiver of orphans and widows who prayed ceaselessly.

The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America
The Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest
+His Grace, Bishop Mark
Friday, May 28, 2010

Dear to God,

Christ is in our midst! By the grace of God we have completed our First Episcopal Assembly, chaired by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North America and attended by 57 of the 65 Hierarchs of North and Central America. He is truly a gracious, loving and patient man and certainly a gift to our Church in North America. May God grant him good health and many years!

Recommendations were made to separate Mexico and Central America from our Episcopal Assembly as their needs linguistically and culturally are quite different. Hopefully, Mexico and Central America will be absorbed into the Episcopal Assembly of South America. Likewise the Bishops of Canada asked to form their own Episcopal Assembly and both requests will be forwarded to the Ecumenical Patriarch per the procedures outlined in the Chambésy Documents.

The agencies of SCOBA were received by the new assembly which considers itself the successor of SCOBA. Monthly updates to a data base will assist in identifying Canonical Bishops, Priests, Deacons and Parishes. Joint Committees have been identified to address the common needs of the Orthodox Church here in the United States which will assist us in uniform articulation, discipline and expression of the One Orthodox Faith.

When building a new house, the most difficult aspect can be assessing the soil and digging deep down to find the bedrock upon which to lay a strong foundation. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios commented that when one looks at a beautiful building, one rarely considers the effort that went into creating a sufficient foundation for the building. By the grace of God we hope we have begun to lay an unyielding foundation upon which to bring the living stones, the faithful in Christ from our various jurisdictions, for the building up of a beautiful Church in North America to the Glory of God. May the All-Holy Spirit direct and guide our Hierarchs as they seek to do Lord’s will.

Your unworthy father in Christ,

+ Mark, Bishop of Toledo and the

Diocese of the Midwest

There is registration information on the Parish Life Conference (PLC) in the parish hall, as well as hotel information and souvenir journal submission forms.

Next year our parish is hosting the conference.  We will need most of our parishioners to be involved in some way to adequately host our diocesan gathering.  Attending this year’s conference is a great way to get prepared to assist for next year.  Consider attending!

From the Fathers

“Courage itself consists in persisting in every good work and in overcoming the passions of soul and body. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, that is, against men, as was the case with the Jews of old, where to conquer other nations was to do the work of God; it is against principalities and powers, that is, against the unseen demons (Ephesians 6:12). He who is victorious conquers spiritually; otherwise he is conquered by the passions. The warfare described in the Old Testament prefigures our spiritual warfare.”                                          ~St. Peter of Damaskos

“A fearful thing is sin, fearful, and the ruin of the soul, and the mischief oftentimes through its excess has overflowed and attacked men's bodies also. For since for the most part when the soul is diseased we feel no pain, but if the body receive though but a little hurt, we use every exertion to free it from its infirmity, because we are sensible of the infirmity, therefore God oftentimes punisheth the body for the transgressions of the soul, so that by means of the scourging of the inferior part, the better part also may receive some healing.”           ~St. John Chrysostom

“Blessed is he who is not attached to anything transitory or corruptible. Blessed is the intellect that transcends all sensible objects and ceaselessly delights in divine beauty. If you make provision for the desires of the flesh (cf. Rom. 13:14) and bear a grudge against your neighbor on account of something transitory, you worship the creature instead of the Creator.”                                                          ~St. Maximos the Confessor

“When holy peace reigns in my soul, then surely the King of Peace dwells within me, the Lord Jesus Christ, with the Father, and the Holy Spirit, and then especially I ought to be full of feelings of gratitude to the Lord of Peace, and endeavor with all my strength to preserve this peace within me by means of fervent prayer and by abstaining from every sin, both inward and outward.”                       ~St. John of Kronstadt
