The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Cindy Karnaghon.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

“There is no question about that which is bred in the uterus, both growing, and moving from place to place.  It remains, therefore, that we must think that the point of commencement of existence is one and the same for body and soul.”

aa LIBRARY LINES  aa

Many of us have a fondness for saints from the British Isles. Two of them were commemorated last week, Sts. Kevin of Ireland (6/3) and Queen Clotilde of the Franks (6/3) and two more this week.

Venerable Cedd (6/7) was the eldest of four brothers (Cedd, Chad, Cynibil and Caelin), all of whom were trained by St Aidan of Lindisfarne and became monks and priests. He and Chad became bishops and saints. St Aidan came to North Umbria from Iona, bringing with him the Celtic way of doing Christianity. As well as superficial differences over the calculation of the date of Easter, and the cut of the tonsure, the Celtic church was organized around monasteries, with peripatetic monks/bishops exercising an apostolate in rural areas, while the European/Roman model centered around an urban cathedral and subordinate parishes.

St. Aidan was well-known for his personal austerity and disregard for the trappings of wealth and power, so that Sts. Cedd and Chad absorbed his example and traditions. After the death of St. Aidan (651) Chad and other Northumbrians went to study with the Irish. St. Cedd was close to St. Aidan's successor, St. Finan, so it is highly likely that he owed his entire formation as a priest and scholar to St. Aidan and to Lindisfarne.

Wednesday, we remember one more Celtic saint, Venerable Columba of Scotland (6/9).  Those of us senior citizens will enjoy his biography, The Legend of Saint Columba by Padraic Colum and illustrated by E. Mackinstry. This old book will bring back memories of similar books enjoyed in elementary school by us middle aged parishioners.

St. Kalliope (6/8) is one of several saints we notice because of her interesting name. It means the beautiful voiced, in Greek.  She suffered great tortures for her faith in 250 A.D.

Friday (6/11) we commemorate a beautiful story behind a hymn and an icon of the Theotokos.  One night, as a monk was alone and reading the hours, a monk he did not know knocked on his door and joined him in prayer. As they sang a hymn by St. Cosmos to the Theotokos, the stranger interjected the words “It is truly meet to bless Thee, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God,” and then continued with “More honorable than the Cherubim…”  The icon glowed and the stranger wrote the “new” words to the hymn on a tile with his finger.  He said, “Sing in this manner, and all the Orthodox as well.” Then he disappeared. These words began to be sung in the Divine Liturgy, and the icon was later sent to the Holy Mountain.

From the Fathers

“In everything they the Apostles did, they thought of God and lived in constant devotion to Him. This spiritual state was their unceasing prayer.”                                                                                                                                                              ~St. Basil the Great

“Just as it is easier to sin in thought than in deed, correspondingly, it is more difficult to struggle with thoughts than with deeds.”                                                                                                                                                                                                    ~Abba Dorotheos of Gaza

“Neither ascetism, nor vigils nor any kind of suffering are able to save, only true humility can do that.”

~Amma Theodora

“Let your soul devote itself to the prayer 'Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me' in all your worries, for everything and for everyone.  Don't look at what's happening to you, look at the light, at Christ, just as the child looks to its mother when something happens to it.  See everything without anxiety, without depression, without strain and without stress.  There is no need to exert yourselves and strain yourselves.  Let all your effort be directed towards the light and towards acquiring the light, so that instead of devoting yourselves to thoughts of despair, which do not come from the Spirit of God, you devote yourselves to the praise of God.”                                                                                        ~Elder Porphyrios

“Some want to go to the Resurrection without passing by way of Golgotha.  If you do not reach the point of despair, you will never see the Light.”                                                                                                                                                 ~Gerondessa Gavriella

“Do not wish what concerns you to be as seems (best) to you, but as God wishes; and you will be free from cares and thankful in your prayer.”                                                                                                                                                      ~St. Nilus of Mt Sinai
