The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Priscilla Neale.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

                                    Morality Corner

In May I mentioned that many say we live in a “post Christian” age.  Older and more traditional moral standards have been called into question.  As I have worked trying to find or write short but meaningful items in the area of true Christian morality, I have found the task daunting.  Not for lack of need or material, but due to the need to say much more than can be said in a paragraph or two.  The very term “morality” itself has many and nuanced definitions.  As a simple working “definition,” maybe we should think of moral behavior as that which sustains life and immoral as that which destroys it.  This is not by any means perfect, but maybe it will get us further down the road.  Pressing that out, sustaining life ultimately means being connected to God, and being disconnected from God is the ultimate destruction.  Consequently we want to do all that we can to support and nourish our relationship with God.  Thus, those moral positions that the Church has embraced and lived for centuries are not meant to prevent pleasure, per se, but rather to protect our connectedness with our Lord and Creator, thus sustaining our life in eternity.                           ~Fr. John

aa LIBRARY LINES  aa

This week we honor two members of a royal family, Olga (7/11), princess of Kiev and her grandson, Great Prince Vladimir of Keiv, equal-to-the-Apostles.  St. Olga was called “Olga the Wise” because she conquered a city with the help of sparrows and pigeons.

Thursday we commemorate Prince Vladimir (7/15), the Baptizer of Russia. He is the grandson of St.Olga, honored Sunday. He began the unification of Slavic lands, and St Hilarion referred to him as an apostolic sovereign like St. Constantine.

Our Holy Mother Church commemorates many pious and influential women saints in July. St. Marina, honored July 17, was a pious virgin.  However, her life on earth was cut short by cruel tortures. While in a dungeon she battled a dragon and a demon disguised as a black dog.

See their icons and stories in St. John Library.
