The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Jack Turner.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

Kroger & Schnucks cards are available in the office for those interested.  Each time you use your Schnucks card or Kroger Gift Card, St. John will receive a percentage of your purchase.  This is a simple way to help the church while doing an everyday activity!

Worship and Liturgical Reminders

Reverencing an icon:  By contemplating the holy icons, we strive to soften our mind and heart, preparing them for a true experience of what is Holy.  By God’s mercy through the icon, we direct our prayers to God Who became visible and approachable in His Son – Who alone we worship and adore.  Standing before an icon, many Orthodox Christians will twice make the sign of the cross and a metania (low bow), then kiss the icon, and complete their veneration with another sign of the cross as a sign of respect.  Others may make a single metania with the sign of the cross and then kiss the icon.  Ordinarily, we kiss the feet or hand or hem of the garment of the saint depicted or the bottom of the icon.  At no time should we kiss the face of the saint depicted.  Anyone using lipstick, chap-stick, or lip balm should refrain from placing one’s lips on the icon, as these oily substances damage the icon.

Prolife Corner

“For many years I have been an outspoken advocate for the unborn child, because in a culture of abortion, the child is like a slave.  The new civil rights movement of our time is the pro-life movement.”    Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King

aa LIBRARY LINES  aa

Our Holy Mother Church commemorates many pious and influential women saints in July.  St. Macrina ’s feast day is Monday(7/19). A miracle occurred at her birth, resulting in her name being Macrina-Thecla.  She was a beacon of light to her entire family including her siblings, Sts. Basil and Gregory of Nyssa. Like the Theotokos, she was betrothed but never married.  She cared for her widowed mother’s physical needs and was a standard of asceticism for her.

Mary Magdalene (7/22) is honored in a very special children’s book in St. John Library.  A Child’s Paradise of Saints by the nun Nectaria McLees gives an account of her life is a couple of pages accompanied by beautiful, icon-styled illustrations. The picture of her shows her offering a red egg to Caesar.

The Story of Mary the Mother of God by Dorrie Papademetriou is a beautifully illustrated book for young children.  The first half of the short book is devoted to Sts. Anna (repose/ 7/25) and Joachim, their desire for a child and the early life of the Theotokos.

On the 24th we commemorate Sts. Boris and Gleb. These men were sons of Prince Vladimir the Great (7/15) who were murdered by their brothers who sought the throne.  These saints with strange sounding names to our English ears are in a category called Passion-bearers.  They are not ascetics, hierarchs, martyrs, but innocent men and women, though unwilling to die, renounced violence and humbly submitted to suffering and death with the spirit of Christ.
