Epistle:  I Corinthians 16:13-24                                            Gospel:  Matthew 21:33-42

The Holy Bread for Eucharist is offered by Trish Ratliff.

Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church.  We are honored by your presence.  It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church.

If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing.  These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye.  Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people.  Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable, and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer.

The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity.  While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.  Since participation in the Eucharist expresses a unity with all the dogma and practice of the Orthodox Church, non-Orthodox guests do not receive Holy Communion.  The Holy Eucharist is reserved for those members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves by prayer, fasting, and recent confession.  All visitors and unprepared Orthodox are invited to partake of the blessed bread as they come forward to venerate the cross at the end of the Liturgy.  Thank you for your understanding.

Church School restarts! - We will begin a new Church School year on Sunday, 9/12.  See this weeks insert for your child’s room assignment!

EXCITING CHOIR NEWS – One of our own parishioners, Nathan Powell, has composed a new setting of the Troparion for St. John (affectionately known here as “O Apostle John”). Some of you heard the choir sing it at Bill and Jennifer Stanek’s wedding last month; if you weren’t there, you can hear a recording of the setting on the parish website at http://www.stjohnmemphis.org/music/Apostle_John.mp3.  While we do not intend to replace the setting we all know and love, the choir would like to begin singing this new setting from time to time.  If you would like sheet music for the new Troparion, it is available in the church office.  We are blessed to have a composer with such talents in our parish.  Thank you, Nathan!

Dinner Clubs – Don’t miss out on the FUN!  All current groups are encouraged to meet one last time before the end of August. Dinner clubs are groups of 6-8 St. John people who meet together for a meal once every two months for a year. The focus is on fellowship, not food. This is a great way to meet and get to know people and develop a sense of community.  Those who want to commit to be in a new dinner club starting in September, please see the sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall.  If you are interested in a group that will meet with children, please mark it on the sign-up sheet.  The deadline for signing-up is today. Any questions or comments please call or email Sh. Margaret McKelroy .

Calling all Secret Sisters and wannabes!!!  The second round of the ever-popular Secret Sisters is beginning this fall.  If you want to join in on the fun, pick up the directions and information sheets from the baskets on the piano in the Fellowship Hall.  Return the information sheet to Corinne Elliott or Judy Terry by today.  Please contact Corinne or Judy with any questions.

Worship and Liturgical Reminders

In my opinion, being in Church for that first ‘Amen’ is a sign, an indication of one's humility.”

Morality Corner

In a study authorized by the Department of HHS and conducted in 2008, the findings pointed to a much more traditional position on the part of parents than much of the broadcast and printed media might suggest.  Approximately 70% of parents either strongly or somewhat agreed that premarital sexual relations are against their values, and that sexual relations should be for married couples only.  Unfortunately, much of the entertainment media certainly sends a different message, and for that reason alone, parents must be very vigilant about what TV shows, radio broadcasts, and movies their children are permitted to see.  Further, and probably more importantly, the behavior of the parents themselves and their own engagement with the same media communicates even more to their children about the values they should adopt.  Remember, in trying to teach our children, what we do is far more powerful than what we say!

LIBRARY LINES

Many times we hear references to The Seventy.  A few of them are more familiar to us than some of the Twelve.  St. Titus (8/25) was a native of Crete. After traveling to Jerusalem, he listened to Christ ’s teachings and witnessed the Crucifixion. He later became a disciple of St. Paul and accompanied him on his missionary journeys.

Right before and after the Dormition of the Theotokos, we commemorate two holy women whose lives were intertwined with hers. The repose of her mother, St. Anna, was July 25, and the commemoration of St. Anna the Prophetess is August 28.  She was widowed after seven years and then lived a life of prayer and fasting in the temple.  At age 84 she was blessed to see the Theotokos and her infant Son being presented there and received into St. Simeon's hands. St. Luke records that she "gave thanks to the Lord and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."
