Catechumen and Inquirers’ Classes

St. John Church regularly offers catechumen and inquirers’ classes for those who are interested in learning about Orthodox Christianity. Attendees range from those who have a simple interest in the rudiments of the Faith to those who have already committed to be received into the Church, either by Baptism of Chrismation. The latter are called catechumens.

Currently, the classes are structured into a format of 26 meetings which cover two broad areas — what we believe and how we pray. The first area uses the Nicene Creed over 12 meetings to highlight and discuss the essentials of the Faith. Topics include the Trinity, the Incarnation of Christ, His Passion, Creation, the nature of the Church. and Gods’ mercy to man through the sacraments. The second area of prayer is broadly covered in 14 meetings Topics cover include personal and corporate prayer, the Lord’s prayer, morality, the sacraments of the Church, worship, fasting, the Church calendar and others.

Classes generally are held on Tuesday evenings beginning at 7:00 PM and lasting to about 8:15 PM. Depending upon the need, additional meeting times are sometimes scheduled for other times as well. Everyone with an interest is welcome. Many times long time members come as well as the newest visitors to the Church. If you have never attended of have not attended one of these classes recently, it is good to double check with the church office to make sure on the beginning time and to make sure no calendar conflicts have preempted the class.

We look forward to seeing you!
